In addition, many instruments have been developed and tested on young adults, quite often college students. Thus, there are a limited number of reliable and valid measurement instruments that can be effectively and efficiently used with children of various ages (Strickland, 2005). For many measurement instruments, it is not clear whether they perform adequately in ethnic and racial minority groups, in persons who are not well-educated, or in the elderly. Another major limitation is that many instruments, as currently developed, are quite long and burdensome for use with clinical populations, and are not practical for use in clinical settings or for research in which participants are quite ill or frail (Strickland, 1997; 1998; 1999).
