1977). Several demographic variables were significant predictors of utilization of the program. Use of multivariate analysis techniques strengthened the study. In a descriptive case study, Pridham (1971) examined nursing interventions designed to instruct a 10-year-old girl with diabetes mellitus about increased responsibility for self-care. The intervention process of assessment of readiness, planning for removal of barriers to learning, and attending to and using child cues for readiness in learning were clearly described.

Bodily function changes constituted the major content of the responses. Orienting responses also were prevalent among ten 7- to 11-year-old children experiencing hospital admission and nonintrusive cardiac diagnostic procedures (Youssef, 1981). Responses reflecting a loss of control were seen in those youths only during the intrusive procedure of cardiac catheterization. Observations of responses to heart surgery and to serial kidney biopsies yielded evidence of anxiety (Bames, 1969; Mandleco, 1976).

Certainly much more study needs tobe done with improvement of the methods used to observe sleep and with observing the relationship between sleep deprivation and well-being. Many treatments are given to children in the hospital: intrusive procedures such as injections, catheterizations, and oxygen administration. Very little research has been conducted on how the developmental stage and the personal life history of the child influence the response to these treatments. Many of the sturlies that have been done are case studies; the potential value of knowledge that can be generalized will be lost if the insights from these small samples are not carried to further descriptive large samples and, when appropriate, to clinical trials or true experiments.
