The H-5s were so effective that the 3rd RS rushed additional H-5s into Korea early in August and, on 21st August, the squadron received an additional allocation of 14 H-5s. On 30th August, the 3rd RS organized Detachment F, whose L-5s and H-5s were used specifically to evacuate the wounded from forward positions. 33 For the remainder of the war, Detachment F (redeSignated as Detachment 1, 3rd Air Rescue Squadron on 22nd June 1951) hopscotched up and down the Korean peninsula as the battle lines changed from day to day, evacuating thousands of wounded American and United Nations troops.
The North Korean Air Force entered combat in the afternoon by attacking the South Korean airfields at Seoul and Kimpo.
